Three Stacks

2017, Oil on Linen Panel, 9"x 6"

This is a painting of the Con Ed power plant in Astoria, Queens (NYC), as seen from Roosevelt Island, in the East River. It is slated for the Small Works Exhibit at Principle Gallery, in Alexandria, VA later this year. The painting, not the power plant, or Roosevelt Island.

The Grundy Stack

2015, Oil on Hardboard, 7"x 5"
Scenes From a Train
#194

Another Building near the rails. This one was interesting in so many ways. The first was obvious, that stack with the company name made of different colored brick. That takes pride, not to mention money. Then there's the treatment of the odd angle in the front. Instead of embracing it, ala Flatiron Building, it was ignored. Angle? What angle? There is an interesting cove detail in the cornice. There are, or were, huge arched doorways. And lastly, those Mediterranean style roof tiles. I wish I could have been in the meetings when this thing was being planned.

Sands of New Jersey

2015, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 5"
Scenes From a Train
#191

This seemed to be a comination of the last two small paintings yhat I've done (water tower, smaoke stack, etc.). It had the added bonus of having heavy earthmoving equipment and mountains of sand.

Newark at Dusk

2015, Oil on Canvas, 10"x 20"
Scenes From a Train

This is one of those scenes that epitomizes just how contrary the landscape can be along the railways.

Stack

2015, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 5"
Scenes From a Train

One of the more impressive buildings along the rails. I'm afraid to find out what it's currantly being used for.

Over The Tracks

2015, Oil on Hardboard, 3"x 7"
Scenes From a Train

When taking Amtrak to NYC this is the last vista seen before entering the Hudson River tunnel.

Chelsea Water Tower

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
#173

Sold

Another view from the Highline in NYC's Chelsea. I fell in love with the copper facade. It must have been restored recently because I could see areas of less oxidized (red not green) metal.

Train Yard at Dusk

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 3"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#161

This series again! Yes. This series. Again. Scenes From a Train. This is a painting of a train yard near Philadelphia. It was dusk when we came out of the tunnel in New Jersey. The sky was beautiful so I took about 150 photographs before the sun went away.

Imperial Walkers

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 12"x 3"
#153

This is a painting of the view from I-5 as we leaving Seattle for the airport. The thing that struck me was how the sun broke through a crevice in the clouds and shone on the Imperial Walkers. These are the heavy lifters along the Duwamish Waterway. I've always been impressed by these behemoths which seem to dominate the landscapes of just about every major seaport.

Industry, 2

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 3"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#139

This scene reminds me of the Southwest, at least the lower half of the painting. The upper half is all New Jersey.

Big Stubby Pencil

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#137

This scene reminds me of a job I had a lifetime ago in Jersey City. I was a project manager for a mid-sized construction company. Driving to work each morning I was struck by the fact that nothing, I mean nothing was pretty, but everything was so damned interesting.

The Yellow Warehouse

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#130

A warehouse along the tracks located somewhere between Philadelphia and NYC. I've noticed this same peculiar pale yellow color in many of these old buildings. It works for me.

Reclamation

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 7"x 5"
Scenes From a Train
#129

Another scene courtesy of Amtrak. As is the case with almost everything along the tracks, what is within arms' reach is ravaged, everything else is pristine.

Approach to New York

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
#117

Just back from a very busy trip to NYC. This was a perfect opportunity to continue this recent series of mine depicting scenes from a train. This is a painting of the marshlands in New Jersey just before the train reaches the Hudson River tunnel. It's sort of morbid but my wife and I both admitted to each other that whenever we pass by this area we can't resist looking for bodies.

A Coat of Yellow Will Do

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#116

This is third in the series. I found it interesting that this building which sits among the railroad tracks was so yellow and at the same time so gloomy.

Industry, 2: Back to Nature

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
#115

Another scene from a train. I found it interesting how the plant life was reclaiming this building while competing with the graffiti.
