Approach to New York

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
#117

Just back from a very busy trip to NYC. This was a perfect opportunity to continue this recent series of mine depicting scenes from a train. This is a painting of the marshlands in New Jersey just before the train reaches the Hudson River tunnel. It's sort of morbid but my wife and I both admitted to each other that whenever we pass by this area we can't resist looking for bodies.

A Coat of Yellow Will Do

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#116

This is third in the series. I found it interesting that this building which sits among the railroad tracks was so yellow and at the same time so gloomy.

Industry, 2: Back to Nature

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
#115

Another scene from a train. I found it interesting how the plant life was reclaiming this building while competing with the graffiti.

Industry, 1

2013, Oil on Canvas, 3.25"x 7"
#114

I was searching through old images and came across a file with pictures taken from the train during a trip to NYC last Fall. I've always been amazed at how many ancient industrial complexes there are along railroad tracks. More to come.

Ah, Spring has sprung. It's not until spring that the early morning light makes an appearance in our kitchen. I caught this scene yesterday where a small sliver of light was catching only the red spoonula. That's right, I said spoonula.

Paprika

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 3.25"x 4"
#111

This painting started out as "Salt" but I have to admit, it wasn't that interesting. Fortunately hardboard makes it pretty easy to wipe away certain areas.

This is an interior scene of my cat (a Maine Coon named Larry) seated with our replica Degas. He is watching a show on CATTV Channel 3, The Squirrel Network.

Morning at the Pond

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
#109

This is a scene of early morning in the, for lack of better word, village of Duffield. Don't blink, you'll miss it.

High Atop the Flatiron Building

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 5"
#108

This is a painting of the top of the Flatiron Building located on 23rd Street in NYC. The odd statue on top of the building is actually a shield flanked by two scantily clothed figures. "23 Skidoo!!"

Morning Drive

2013, Oil on Hardboard, 4"x 4"
#107

"Morning Drive" refers not to pulling over on my way to work to take photographs of something spectacular. No. It might if I could get up a little earlier so that I wasn't rushing to work each morning. "Morning Drive" refers to my horrible habit of wanting to have it all. I want to sleep a little later AND take photographs. I can't tell you how many shocked faces that I encounter in on-coming traffic as they watch me driving with my left hand and take pictures, with a full bodied SLR camera, with my right. To paraphrase Tom and Ray (Click and Clack for those in the know) "Don't drive like, well, me!"

Copper Facade

2013, Oil on Canvas, 10"x 8"
#106

This is a building at the corner of 25th Street and Broadway in NYC. It was painted from a photograph that I took last Fall. For months I kept looking at the picture trying to figure out how to make it work as a painting. Finally I asked myself, what specifically I liked about it? I decided to zoom in on the most interesting part, the Copper Facade and the shadows from the building across the street.
