Full Moon Over Snow

2013, Oil on Canvas, 7"x 5"
#105

This is a painting of the full moon about one month ago. Maybe I should say, one moon ago. The sky was slightly overcast and of course there was snow on the ground. Perfect. The more I paint the more I come to realize that it's not the weather and environment that changes over the years as much as how I see and react to it.

Blue Streak

2013, Oil on Canvas, 10"x 8"
#104

This is what I saw outside my window at school today. I can't say it enough, great year for clouds.

Snow on the Mountain

2013, Oil on Canvas, 8"x 10"
#103

This is a section of the mountains that I have to admit I overlooked. It wasn't until I saw it with a dusting of snow, like powdered sugar on a Veniero's cannoli, that it caught my eye.

Mountain in Haze

Another painting of the Tuscarora Mountains. For me, this never gets old.

Peeps on a Salmon Plate

2013, Oil on Canvas, 5"x 7"
#101

'Tis the season to be sugary. This is the time of year when I try to get some serious work done. Fortunately that rarely ever happens.

The Red Shed, 3

2013, Oil on Canvas, 5"x 7"
#100

My 100th daily painting. This is the shed behind our house. I years I really hated this thing, then I started painting it.

A Single Berry

2013, Oil on Canvas, 4"x 6"
#099

I'm back from a brief hiatus due to a pretty nasty corneal abrasion. It's good to be painting again.

It was Strawberry Day at school. The Art club holds various fruit sales during the year to pay for the annual field trip.

I started this painting as a study of just the light bulb in the bowl. After looking at it for a while I decided that it needed something in the top and bottom. I found the pears in the fridge (while looking for a snack) and the visual joke hit me.

The Opening

2013, Oil on Canvas, 5"x 7"
#097

This is a painting of the Tuscarora Mountains as seen from Mercersburg, PA. This is the view that I see every day when I leave school. Whenever the clouds and mountains do something spectacular like this I pull over into a side parking lot and shoot 20 or 30 photographs. I'm sure that there's a lot of "There's that crazy artist feller that they hired to teach the kids paintin'." Only happy to entertain.

Bowls From Above

2013, Oil on Canvas, 7"x 5"
#096

These are a few of the leftover props that I keep on hand at school. Just some of the many things that my students hate to paint.

The Red Shed, 2

2013, Oil on Canvas, 5"x 7"
#095

I've said it before, it has been a great year for clouds (I'm including part of last year). This is another painting of a shed on a neighboring property.

Paper Lanterns, 2

2013, Oil on Canvas, 7"x 5"
#094

One of my students put these lanterns up after the Chinese New Year decorations were taken down. Thank you, Katie. This scene reminded me of a painting that I did several years ago, Paper Lanterns (now Paper Lanterns, 1). In both paintings the lanterns seem out of place, but in each painting it is for a different reason. See if you can tell why.

I did this in class to show my students that they shouldn't be so afraid of self portraits. In doing so I scared the crap out of them, AND me.

Water

1998, Oil on Canvas, 24"x 22"

This is a painting I did 15 years ago. I've never published or posted it anywhere before, mostly because when it was painted the only image that I had of it was a slide. Remember those? It is a painting of the beautiful, warm water off the Caribbean Island of Tortola. I always tell my students not to think so much about telling a story, just try to share an experience. Given the cold weather of late I thought that I might share this one with all of you.
