Dahlia Lounge

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 10"x 8"
Seattle
#170

Sold

This is the beautiful neon creation (to call it a sign would not do it justice) outside Seattle's Dahlia Lounge. Unfortunately, painting is a somewhat static medium so it did not allow me to show you how the fish's tail wags. You'll just have to trust me on this. On our trip out there last summer we were graciously treated to dinner here by my cousin Dave and his wife Sue and daughter Anna. We had the most wonderful meal and even better evening.

Broadway and 23rd, 2

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 7"x 5"

Revisiting an old image. I never do this, but it was a request made by a friend. I had originally painted this NYC street corner last year (see here). I painted from the same photograph but I intentionally did not look at images of the original painting. I wanted to keep my approach as fresh as was possible under the circumstances.

Below the Curve

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 7"x 5"
#169

While wandering through New York I had forgotten where I was. This happens more than I'd like to admit. As I was approaching Fifth Avenue It seemed to peek around the neighboring building at me. I hadn't eaten lunch so it could have been that. As I got closer it appeared to stand more upright and proud as if waiting to have its picture taken. I really shouldn't skip meals.

Chelsea Cornice

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
#168

This is a painting of a cornice that tops a building near the Highline in Chelsea, NYC. I love these old building details. I can even point out the corbels and the dentil moldings. After that you're on your own.

Under the Big Curve

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#167

Coming out of Harrisburg, PA, the train passes under this overpass. I have always enjoyed figuring out where we are and if I've ever been here using any other mode of transportation. I'm weird that way. This is the Airport Connector (it's actually called that) which is the main entryway into the Harrisburg International Airport. Having flown out of there on many occasions it gives me the hat trick: planes, trains and automobiles. Weird might be putting it mildly.

View From the Corner Office

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 7"x 5"
#166

This is a painting of the Greek Revival building on Park Avenue South at, I believe, East 25th Street. It's across from Madison Square Park. It houses the New York State Supreme Court's Appellate Division. I wandered around taking pictures of this building for almost an hour, so I'm sure that my face is now in some Homeland Security database for facial recognition. The price we pay for art.

Arch Madness

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#165

Approaching Philadelphia there are all of these different rail lines running along, over, and under each other. They have all been built in various eras so they were engineered and built accordingly. This one was apparently built during the Roman Empire. I was thinking of calling it "...Why Not a Chicken?"

The Shadow

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 5"x 7"
Scenes From a Train
#164

This is a section of track just outside of Newark, New Jersey. The tran dips down into something of a trench lined on both sides with these great stone walls. The shadow is from, for lack of better term a signal trestle.

The Interchange

2014, Oil on Hardboard, 4"x 12"
Scenes From a Train
#163

Part of a clover leaf just west of Secaucus, NJ. The challenges with this painting were how to show that the bridge was curving outward in the center, and whether or not there was enough information so that you could figure out what was going on.

Over Under

This bridge caught my eye from about 200 yards up the track. There's something about red. I'd like to think that Paul Georges would appreciate this one.
