Cumberland Valley Exhibit

I received this email yesterday from the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts:

Thank you for entering the 81^st Annual Cumberland Valley Artists Exhibition. It is with pleasure that I inform you that the following work of art you submitted was accepted for inclusion in the exhibition:

Very good news, indeed! I am honored to be included.

The exhibit opens on August 17 and runs through November 3, 2013. The opening reception will be on Sunday, September 8, 2013, 2:30 - 4:00.

On a slightly more personal note, an exhibit of works created by my museum students will open that same day. Please come by and show support for my fearless students and also for all of the artists fortunate enough to be included in the Cumberland Valley juried show.

This is a painting that was started in the Autumn of 2011 as a demonstration piece at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, in Hagerstown, Maryland. Those familiar with the Museum will notice the reflection of the atrium roof in the bowl.

This is a painting of a building in Mercersburg, PA. I would pass it every Wednesday as I made my way from the High School to teach my painting class at the Museum. I would inevitably get caught at the light each time. I studied this scene once a week for nine months. Gestation period?

Paper Lanterns

I haven't posted anything in a while because I've been busy working on a painting that is somewhat large and fairly complicated, so I looked through my archives and found this painting which has actually been hanging in my dining room.

It was painted during an event held last Spring, inside the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. I don't usually like to paint in front of an audience but I have a tough time saying no to anyone at the Museum (Please, don't tell them). I set up my easel and was prepared to work on a still life of objects brought for the occasion. After some searching, I realized that there were no electrical outlets anywhere (I have no idea how they vacuum that gallery). Thinking it unwise to paint from candle light, I started looking around for anything to paint. I looked up and saw this hanging above me.
